Sanction Against Unión Cuba Petróleo, Another U.S. Attempt at Asphyxiation

In a new attempt to strangle and subdue Cuba, the United States government imposed another unilateral measure, this time against the state energy company Unión Cuba Petróleo (CUPET), as announced today by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The official reported on his X social network account: *"Today I impose sanctions on Cuba's state energy company, Unión Cuba-Petróleo (CUPET), under President Donald Trump's Executive Order 14404."*

The head of U.S. diplomacy justified this new twist in the maximum pressure policy against the island with the slanderous argument that "Cuba's communist elites have turned energy into a weapon of social control and kleptocratic profit."

In its update, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) added to its Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list for Cuba on Thursday: "UNIÓN CUBA PETROLEO (also known as CUPET), Avenida Salvador Allende No. 666, Entre Oquendo y Soledad, La Habana 10300, Cuba."

Referring to the measure, Rubio added that President Trump desires "a new future for the Cuban people" and assured that they will continue "targeting" their objective, which is nothing more than an attempt to provoke a regime change in the Caribbean nation.

Derived from the current administration's policy of tightening the blockade, Cuba is experiencing one of the worst energy crises in its recent history. The Cuban people are affected by prolonged electrical service interruptions, and fuel supply shortages have caused significant damage in areas such as public health, transportation, and other services.

This sanction against CUPET is part of the punitive measures adopted by Trump under his Executive Order 14404, aimed at tightening the siege around Cuba. In recent weeks, on May 7, the Secretary of State also announced sanctions against the Business Administration Group S.A., known as GAESA, and pressured foreign companies —with a deadline of June 5— to cut ties with the island.

He also imposed sanctions against the country's top leadership and their relatives. Additionally, the Department of Justice, in this scheme aimed at seeking pretexts for military aggression against Cuba, filed an illegal and illegitimate accusation against Cuban leader Raúl Castro.

The Chargé d'Affaires of the Cuban Embassy in the United States, Lianys Torres, said after this new measure was announced that the sanctions against CUPET are part of the design to asphyxiate and subdue Cuba, which directly and criminally impacts the Cuban people.

"Cease this collective punishment against children, pregnant women, chronically ill patients, the elderly, and the rest of the Cuban people," the diplomat expressed on social media. (Prensa Latina)
