Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo declared the removal of the statues of Fidel Castro Ruz and Ernesto Che Guevara from the Encuentro monument, built on the site where the revolutionaries met and which also symbolizes the close friendship between the peoples of Cuba and Mexico, to be illegal.
According to La Jornada, the president explained that the removal of the sculptures was not approved by the Committee on Monuments and Artistic Works in Public Spaces, an essential legal step in making such a decision, which shows that the removal was unjustified, "regardless of whether one agrees or disagrees with one or the other figure," as the president pointed out earlier.
Sheinbaum described the removal of both sculptures from the monument complex in Cuauhtémoc as "tremendous intolerance" and warned that the idea of auctioning them off, promoted by the mayor of that Mexico City neighborhood, Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, who promoted the removal, is a crime of "damage to national heritage."
She also said in her regular press conference, Mañanera, that Rojo de la Vega's intention smacks of hypocrisy, "because it later became known that she was on vacation in Cuba. If she had really been against it, she would not have chosen that destination for her vacation," Sheinbaum said.
The president supported the statement by the Ministry of Culture and the Mexico City government, which asked Cuauhtémoc's administration to reinstate the work, questioning the legality of its removal.
The rejection of the removal was also evident yesterday in Tabacalera Park, when social, union, and political groups gathered, convened by the Mexican Movement of Solidarity with Cuba, and demanded the return of the statues.
"There was no consultation with the people who live in the neighborhood, which is not cheap to live in. It is very clear that this is an ideological issue for Alessandra Rojo de la Vega to generate likes," said one of the neighborhood residents. (Source: Granma)
