The province of Holguin managed to reduce energy consumption during peak hours to 13 percent as a daily average in correspondence with the guidelines of the top management of the country, after implementing the contingency measures that Cuba faces since September 12.
Julio Cesar Estupiñan Rodriguez, president of the Provincial Assembly of People’s Power, said in a meeting with the local media that during this period the 938 high consumers of the territory reduced around 40 percent of the use of electricity.
In the business sector, the nickel plants located in the municipality of Moa have a decisive role, as the Ernesto Che Guevara and Pedro Sotto Alba factories guarantee their self-supply, which makes possible to reduce consumption through the National Energy System (SEN).
Estupiñan Rodriguez said that an assessment is made of the impact that the actions have had during the strictest days of the current situation, in order to establish which will remain in force after the fuel deficit caused by the worsening of the hostile policy to the US government is alleviated.
When oil shortages decrease, savings and control over energy carriers must prevail to avoid effects on different spheres of the economy and society, he said.
He also noted that in order to reduce the demand for energy in the province, organizational measures were adopted in the Cooling Plant in the city of Holguin, where they decreased by about 19 mega Watts compared to the previous month and it was decided to exploit to the maximum the alternative sources, mainly in agriculture through the use of 47 solar panels.
In the sugarcane areas irrigation systems were not applied for 16 days, as the rains favored planting, thus contributing to the saving of more than 30 thousand liters of diesel, he added.
For his part, Hector Lugo Graña, director of the Holguin Electricity Company, explained that it is a goal to move the electric peaks, for which the work centers keep the necessary lights and equipment on, in addition to readjusting the work shifts in accordance with the routines of each entity.
