The special education system in the province of Holguin registers this school year more than three thousand children with visual, physical-motor and hearing disabilities, as part of the sector's equal opportunities strategy.

In the eastern territory there are centers specialized in the care of these children, whose groups develop programs dedicated to promoting communication skills and daily life, said the methodologist Yamila Garrido to the ACN news agency.

According to Garrido, these studies aim to the reintegration of students into general education and include in the educational plans subjects such as crafts, which contribute to the incorporation of work activities.

Among the centers of reference in Holguin stands out the special school La Edad de Oro, dedicated to the care of children with visual disabilities, which is located in areas near the historic center of the city.

Elizabeth Laguna, director of the institution, explained that workshops on mobility in open spaces are distinguished by programs on topics related to visual stimulation and sign language, among other matters that contribute to the training of infants.

She indicated that the center also prioritizes the relationship with the family, which prepares parents to complement the skills acquired by their children during teaching.

The special education program in Cuba, which attends school children with mental retardation, blindness, congenital deafness and motor disabilities caused by conditions that cause delays in development, is one of the main achievements of the Cuban Revolution since January 1959. / ACN
