The meeting at the Holguín Customs Office was part of the Tenth Operation for Drug Prevention and Enforcement, held at the Frank País García International Airport. This initiative aims to strengthen public safety through education and direct action against drug use and trafficking, reinforcing cooperation among state institutions and society.

During the activities, specialists from the Health Department, the Prosecutor’s Office, and the Anti-Drug Enforcement Agency, along with Carmen Gertrudys Bejerano Tamayo, the provincial Director of Justice, discussed issues related to drug consumption and trafficking, their social impact, and measures to ensure national security. They emphasized the importance of preventive work, especially among young people, considered the most vulnerable group.
Bejerano Tamayo highlighted Cuba’s efforts to update its criminal laws and improve organizational structures to confront the rise of drug trafficking. She underscored the role of the provincial anti-drug subgroup, made up of Customs and other key sectors, in coordinating joint actions and strengthening vigilance and education against drugs.

During the debate, young participants expressed concern about the spread of synthetic drugs such as “El Químico,” highly dangerous substances that have already caused serious cases and even deaths in Holguín communities.
Prosecutor Fernando Sera Planas explained the severe penalties established by law for those involved in trafficking or related offenses, which can include the maximum sentence.

For her part, Dr. Yoiset Alcolea Montoya stressed the importance of education within families and awareness about the harmful effects of drugs. Meanwhile, Holguín Customs Chief Yolanda Piñeiro reported recent detections of electronic cigarettes and controlled medications, highlighting staff training, the use of canine detection units, and improved inspection procedures to maintain secure borders.
