The province of Holguín, among those with the largest number of General Education schools in Cuba, is preparing for the new school year 2024-2025, which will begin on September 2 throughout the country.

Luis Felipe Batista Rodríguez, director of the sector in the territory, told ACN that there are more than 1,300 centers in the 14 municipalities, where students are taught from early childhood to pre-university and technical and professional education (ETP).

He added that there is an enrollment of around 142 thousand students this year the different urban and rural schools, for an alternative teaching coverage of 92 percent.

Despite the need for teachers, the province has the minimum resources essential for the start of the course, including the supplies for the boarding schools and the uniform for preschool, fifth grade and initial grades of other levels that are on scholarship, he pointed out.

Based on the study material, he specified that they will initially distribute notebooks, pencils and textbooks, corresponding to the Third Improvement strategy, which will continue to be applied with an emphasis on vocational training and professional guidance, while the arrival of the workbooks is expected at the end of September.

During 2024-2025 they will continue with the project to build children's homes and the follow-up to the 22 existing facilities of this type, which have helped to satisfy all the demands for places for children in eight municipalities, he commented.

Another priority is to increase the enrollment for teaching careers, which currently reach 70 percent of what is required, and to ensure the quality of the training of future teachers, for which specialties related to foreign languages such as English, French and German have been expanded, he explained.

The director added that the fundamental objective is to develop a successful school year, overcoming the main problems that the current context imposes, among which are teacher coverage, the scarce availability of uniforms and the results of entrance exams, all with the support of educators, family and the community.
