Holguín marks 65th anniversary of the taking of Sagua de Tánamo

The 65th anniversary of the taking of Sagua de Tánamo, a Cuban city bombed by the Batista tyranny's aircraft and one of the most important battles fought by the Rebel Army in its final offensive to overthrow it, was celebrated today in this Holguín municipality.


The monument to the fallen martyrs, located in this town of the Turquino Plan, hosted the ceremony to commemorate the action that concluded on December 24 with the liberation of that town by combined forces of columns 19 José Tey and the 17 Abel Santamaría, belonging to the Second Eastern Front Frank País.

In his speech, Jorge Ocaña Calviño, first secretary of the municipal committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, recalled the date when the tyranny's aircraft bombed the place and caused great destruction.

He expressed that 65 years of struggle means the determination to honor the legacy of the fallen combatants and continue with a firm step to continue producing and explained the results obtained by the territory in sectors such as health, education and agriculture.

Among the achievements, he noted the recovery of the services of the Juan Paz Camejo Municipal Hospital and the repair of the maternal ward and the completion of the works in two elementary schools, in addition to the attention to the prioritized neighborhood in the community of Bazán.

Regarding agriculture, he referred to the international cooperation projects "Más café III" and "Prodecafé" and the five polygons managed to increase food production in units of the Turquino Plan.

180 combatants participated in the liberation of Sagua de Tánamo who, distributed in four assault groups, after several days of fighting, managed to get the forces of Fulgencio Batista's army to ask for surrender.
