Authorities in Holguín debate on issues of socioeconomic interest

The Provincial Government Council in Holguín met on Wednesday to analize the results of the food industry in this eastern territory, in which productions such as milk, meat and fish are affected, although there are reserves identified to revitalize them. In addition, initiatives were presented in production centers (such as canned fruit), aimed at stabilizing offers and adding others, given the high demand.


Hiring, planting on a larger scale, fuel support for agricultural activities, the fight against crime , deficit of raw materials, productive diversification, price observance, saving energy carriers and commitments in each municipality, among other topics, were discussed at the meeting.

Hernández Aguilera expressed the need to measure what is produced in physical units, coupled with percentages or economic values, in order to have a clearer idea of ​​what is contributed. Likewise, he urged to materialize experiences that allow the creation of infrastructures belonging to the industries themselves and to capture knowledge from those who work in an artisanal way, with reduced availability of equipment.

Participants addressed the situation in the Turquino Plan of Holguín, where coffee production has been reduced in recent years, important in domestic consumption and for export, which aims to be strengthened along with food self-management through the cultivation of crops of vegetables, fruits, coconuts and cocoa.

The state of the Commerce units, the functioning of communications and health areas (including medical offices), recovery of roads and other issues that urgently need to be improved were also discussed in the meeting.

Regarding the tourism sector, it was informed that the Holguín destination achieved favorable indicators by the end of August, compared to the same period in 2022, and is already showing recovery, compared to the stage before the pandemic. However, this destination requires more recreational, cultural and commercial options, given the arrival of other generations of clients. The reduction of imported supplies, which must be replaced by local production, some in the food sector, which could be generated in the territory, was also a topic of interest during the meeting.

Communal hygiene, whose sanitation task behavior is unstable, was discussed. Authorities from that sector in Holguín reported on the daily monitoring of obituary services and waste collection using animal traction, given the difficult fuel situation.

The agenda also included issues related to the condition of roads and their infrastructure, positioning of road workers in rural areas and quality of asphalt, plowing and painting work, drainage, road safety and signage, with local alternatives to a large extent and implementation of the circular economy.
