The protection of endemic species of flora in the mountainous area of the province of Holguín is one of the objectives of specialists at the Ministry of Science and Technology and Environment in the eastern territory.

By promoting scientific projects based on the natural regeneration of plant varieties, experts promote the conservation of these plants adapted to specific humidity and soil conditions typical of these reservoirs.

José Luis Gómez Echavarría, main specialist in this area, said to ACN that one of the main scenarios is the Sierra de Nipe, among the ecosystems with the greatest endemism in Cuba and with a wide presence of exclusive local genera of that elevation, located at east of the main city.

He indicated the program has allowed the characterization of plant varieties, including location, reproduction modes and number of young specimens, in addition to the registration of new populations.

He stressed that the study, started in 2020, allows for the extension of environmental education actions in nearby communities through hiking, since most varieties live among the vegetation, are small and almost imperceptible.

Institutions such as the Environmental Research and Services Center and the Botanical Garden in Holguín are involved in the flora conservation programs, with the aim of preserving the ecosystem balance and preventing the negative effects of meteorological phenomena and human action.
