Holguín Hosts National Event on Water Transfer Projects

Participants in the First National Meeting on Water Transfers that takes place in Holguín from June 4 to 8 are assessing the progress of the construction and utility of these hydraulic engineering works, as well as the work done in the past years and exchange experiences and researches on the topic.
 
Based in the El Bosque motel of this city, investors, researchers, designers, builders, operators and specialists focus the debate on topics related to design, construction and technologies employed, execution control, operation and maintenance, as well as the economic, social and environmental impact of these operations.
 
The event began with an overview of the current situation and perspective of water management in Cuba, the integrality of the investment of the East-West Water Transfer and a lecture on the technologies used in these hydraulic projects.
 
In the opening remarks, Roberto Pupo, general director of the Integrated Project Management of the Transfer, highlighted the importance of these actions that guarantee the supply of water to the best agricultural areas or the greatest populated areas and also allows its control in those areas of extreme abundance of water resources, which affects the people and the economy.
 
About the East-West Transfer, he highlighted that two stages have already been completed. "The first stage has guaranteed the water supply to the provincial capital and the tourist pole of the north coast, while the second stage, the Birán-Mayarí stretch, has generated more 27.0 gw/h, which means a saving of more of 6 thousand tons of fuel. It has also avoided floods in the municipality of Mayarí since 2011 and placed under irrigation a figure greater than 3 thousand hectares of land ".
 
Wednesday’s agenda includes the presentation of papers related to the Baconao-Santiago de Cuba Water Transfer and the mobile android applications to support the control and execution of works in the Transfer, among others.
 
The event, attended by professionals from all over the country, was convened by the Integrated Water Technology Center and the Hydraulic Engineering Society of the Union of Architects and Construction Engineers of Cuba, with the co-sponsorship of the Engineering Services Company -Integrated Management of Transfers and Raudal Projects.
