Canada: very close to Holguín

Holguín, along with Matanzas, is one of the Cuban provinces with which the Canadian government maintains the closest ties on the island, through its participation in two of the most important economic sectors in the territory: tourism and the production of nickel and cobalt.
This was announced by the Canadian ambassador to Cuba, Jhon Geoffrey Gartshore, who highlighted the preference of his fellow citizens for the beaches of eastern Cuba and the arrival of full flights from his country to Holguín, whose main source market for tourists is Canada.
In addition to its leading role in the so-called smokeless industry, Canada is an important partner in the nickel industry, through the participation of the Sherritt and General Nickel Company S.A as a partner in the Empresa del Níquel Comandante Ernesto Guevara, in Moa.
The cooperation of the Canadian company extends to the social area by contributing with the donation of refrigerators for institutions of the commercial network in the municipality, technology for the Guillermo Luis General Hospital and an audio system for La Colmenita Rayitos de Lucero.
On the other hand, the participation of Canada as a partner in the Empresa Mixta Bucanero S.A, located in the municipality of Holguín, has also been important.
The ambassador highlighted the importance of the Chair of Canadian Studies at the University of Holguín, led by Professor Vilma Páez, and the WEFLA International Congress on Foreign Languages, Communication and Culture.
Currently, the governments of Cuba and Canada are working on the FORMER Project, in Moa, which is committed to the development of renewable energy, improving the quality of life of people in vulnerable communities and contributing to gender equality.
