Generating electricity for the consumption of all Cubans is the incentive driving the repair works being carried out in the Lidio Ramón Pérez thermoelectric plant (Felton), located north of the municipality of Mayarí, in the province of Holguín.
A complex operation occupied the attention of the last hours in a maneuver that allowed the lifting of the largest section of the smoke duct being repaired in Unit 2 of the thermoelectric plant. The gigantic pipes that allow the gases to escape towards the chimney, then of the energy generation process, they were connected in their greatest stretch.
Saúl Cruz, the brigade chief who works on the coupling of the ducts, believes that progress is being made despite all the difficulties and assured that this work is the most strategic of the entire assembly process, since now only the elbows of the pipe are missing, but they are smaller and the process is less complex; These ducts are exposed to the permanent release of steam, which is why they require repairs and it had been in operation for ten years.
In addition to repairing the gas ducts towards the chimney, in recent days repair works were carried out on the air fan for the boiler. Currently, works are underway on the gas recirculators, as well as the installation of preheaters and new pneumatic valves for the burners.
Unit 2 has been out of service for maintenance work since March and Unit 1 still operating, does not generate electricity at full capacity due to dirt in the boiler, which obstructs the full use of its power installed; it is expected that repair works continue to progress in the coming days.
