With the participation of computer specialists and fans of this branch in Holguín, the Latin American Festival of Free Software Installation (FLISOL), considered the largest event in Latin America in terms of free technologies, was held online on Saturday in this province sponsored by the Union of Informatics of Cuba (UIC), the Cuban Free Software Community and the Young Club of Computing and Electronics.
Carlos Parra, president of the UIC in the eastern territory, said that the event promotes the socialization of knowledge on topics such as free software, of great importance due to the resolutions and public policies carried out in Cuba to undertake the migration process to open source platforms.
According to Parra, the issue which was previously assumed in the country from the initiative of some computer scientists and isolated entities now has become a law, so each state entity has to present its migration strategy between 2021 and 2024.
“This year, given the impossibility of carrying out FLISOL face-to-face in the Youth Club, we joined the online contest through the UIC videoconference platform.
In addition, the Linux Professional Institute (LPI), a certified Linux organization based in Canada, was integrated as a participant, since the UIC is its partner in Cuba. This gives our country prestige, by having a social organization linked to this international institution, the only one in the world that grants Linux certifications”.
With events of this type, Cuba aims to spread state and private initiatives to lead the country to technological sovereignty.
