The First Meeting of the Multidisciplinary Groups and Functional Units for Oncology Patients Care will take place in Holguín on Wednesday, November 6, with the aim to debate on the improvement of diagnosis and medical assistance to cancer patients.
Professionals from various disciplines, including Clinical Oncology, Radiotherapy, Surgery, Imaging, Nutrition, Medical Physics, Nuclear Medicine, Psychology and Genetics will attend the event convened by the Holguín Territorial Oncology Center (CTOH), located at about 750 kilometers from Havana.
The director of the health center, Dr.Nitza Sanz, said that the event will contribute to raising the scientific level of human resources, which will result in a more effective treatment for the patient and his family.
Sanz noted that multidisciplinary medical assistance starts from the initial evaluation of the patient by teams of experts in each type of cancer, until reaching a consensus on which decisions to follow in the diagnosis and treatment.
"Method that also ensures the accompaniment of the patient and his family during the whole process, managed by the nursing staff," she explained.
The Holguín Territorial Oncology Center, with provides medical care to patients from several provinces in eastern Cuba, is attached to the Vladimir Ilich Lenin University Hospital, the first medical institution inaugurated by the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, in this region of the country, 54 years ago.
One of the main results obtained by the CTOH is the start of cancer treatment between seven to twenty one days after the diagnosis of the disease.
This Center was one of the first in the country to computerize the cancer statistics and records of patients in its main areas, such as the Oncology Emergency Unit, where digital medical records are kept, which extends to other services.
It also has a website available since the beginning of the year, as another way for scientific exchange between professionals and to provide the population with up-to-date information on operation, consultation hours and other important details of the institution.
