Holguín Marks Int’l Day of the Anesthesiologist

They are named the anonymous heroes of the operating room, because almost nobody talks about them or their work before, during and after the surgical procedure.
However, the anesthesiologist plays an important role in the operating room, as it protects and regulates the basic life functions of the patient during surgery, while diagnosing and offering treatment for complications that may occur during the operation and the postoperative period.
It is said that "a good surgeon wants a good anesthetist and a bad surgeon needs it", but what is true is that October 16, 1846 is part of history as the beginning of the use of anesthesia in the world.
That day at the General Hospital of the city of Boston, Dr. William Thomas Green Morton performed a public demonstration of surgical anesthesia by supplying ether to a patient during surgery, so that from that moment the patients would be freed from surgical suffering.
Dr. Ramón Cruz López, head of the provincial group of Anesthesia and Critical Care, with more than four decades of experience in the discipline, recalled the beginnings of this clinical specialty in the eastern territory, its development and perspectives.
"In Holguin, after the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, there were no anesthetists in the civil hospital; this specialty was opened here with the inauguration of the Hospital Vladimir Ilich Lenin, in 1965", said the doctor.
In the province, more than 88,000 surgeries are performed each year, with a performance of more than 4.0 operations per room. Up to the end of August, 56,589 surgeries had been made, for 114.5 percent compliance.
