The province of Holguín is preparing for the 65th National Bivalent Oral Polio Vaccination Campaign, scheduled for 2026, which will be carried out in two phases simultaneously throughout the country.

In this northeastern province, a total of 32,412 children will receive the vaccine, including 21,997 children over one month old and under three years of age who will receive two doses in both phases.

Meanwhile, in the second phase, approximately 10,415 nine-year-olds will receive a booster dose of the bivalent oral polio vaccine.

According to information from the head of the Vaccination Program in Holguín, Dr. Norge Fernández Aguilera, the first phase of this campaign is scheduled from April 27 to May 2, with a recovery week between May 4 and 9 for those who were ill or had other reasons that prevented them from being vaccinated during the planned period.

The second vaccination cycle will take place from July 15 to 20, while from July 22 to 27, infants who were unable to receive the vaccine will be vaccinated.

The Polio Vaccination Campaign in our country will coincide with the 24th Vaccination Week in the Americas (VWA) and the 15th World Immunization Week (WIM), whose central theme will be “Your decision makes a difference.”

This new vaccination campaign aims to keep our country free of polio, a serious and potentially debilitating disease that was eradicated in Cuba in 1962 after a four-month campaign, which has ensured the protection of the Cuban population under 64 years of age.
