Holguín province faces a serious health problem with cancer, which remains the second leading cause of death among non-communicable diseases.
According to the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology, and Microbiology, this disease was responsible for approximately 25% of deaths recorded at the end of 2025, making it one of the region’s main public health concerns.
The most lethal types of cancer for both men and women are those affecting the trachea, bronchi, and lungs. In men, prostate and laryngeal cancers also stand out, while in women, breast and cervical cancers are the most common, with a recent increase in cases of laryngeal and colon cancer. Additionally, skin cancer shows a high incidence in the province, contributing to the overall mortality rate from malignant tumors.
As part of World Cancer Day (February 4) and International Childhood Cancer Day (February 15), an educational campaign is being held to promote cancer prevention.
The initiative encourages people to perform self-examinations, pay attention to changes such as new or altered moles or spots, and take personal responsibility for maintaining their health.
The planned activities range from local clinics and schools to provincial-level health institutions.
In the main municipality, the central event is held at the dental unit of the Alcides Pino Bermúdez Polyclinic, with similar events taking place in other areas to raise awareness that cancer is preventable through healthy lifestyles and early detection.
