At the Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja Pediatric Hospital in Holguín, diagnostic and therapeutic arthroscopies have been solidly established for pediatric and adolescent patients.
It is the third operation of this type performed in less than a month. This time, on an eight-year-old boy.
The child was diagnosed with a synovial plica in one of his knees, compressing the cartilage of the inner femoral condyle, but not the patella itself, according to orthopedic and trauma specialist José Alejandro Cobas Paz.
"Clinically, it's difficult to distinguish between this problem and other similar pathologies; however, diagnostic and therapeutic arthroscopy can clearly identify the difference between the two and treat them appropriately," Dr. Cobas explained.
The child’s postoperative course progressed well, and discharge was expected soon.
The multidisciplinary team at the hospital is noted for its professionalism in applying this minimally invasive technique, contributing to improving the health and quality of life of its patients.
