In order to prepare families and people who work with children with Down Syndrome, the workshop "Love Chromosome “was recently held in the northeastern city of Holguín.
Sponsored by the Cuban Association of People with Intellectual Disabilities (ACPDI), established in June of last year, the workshop was about acceptance and ways to treat and manage children with Down Syndrome, not only in the family environment, but also in the community.
MsC. Mariluz Torres Igarza, a teacher at the Jorge Ricardo Massetti special education school, highlighted essential elements related to treatment within the home, communication between families that have members with this disability to exchange ways of acting, love and the patience required by the educational care and socialization of the child in the neighborhood.
Danae Mouso Díaz, vice president of the ACPDI, stressed the need to raise awareness and sensitize people with the ways to treat a child with this syndrome, as well as the creation of centers for its comprehensive development.
"Despite the challenges that children with Down syndrome may face, they are able to reach their full potential with the support and empathy from other people," she said.
The workshop, held at the Center for Improvement for Culture, was attended by Health specialists, families, and teachers.
