The Center for the Development of Agricultural Machinery (Cedema) in Holguín boosted the province’s economic growth during 2025 through innovation and reverse engineering projects aimed at meeting the needs of local companies and institutions.

According to General Director Rafael Valera Llanes, the institution focused on designing a new variant of seawater pipes for the Lidio Ramón Pérez Thermoelectric Plant in Felton, essential for cooling the boiler steam.

Among the main projects for the plant were reverse engineering works using 3D scanning applied to impellers of suction, bilge, and submersible pumps, as well as the design of a support structure for lifting the dome of the second block’s boiler using hydraulic elevators.

Cedema developed several prototypes linked to the food industry, including a cassava harvester, intermediate rice transport equipment, a locally made well-drilling machine—vital in facing water shortages—and container access ramps. It also designed a swing bridge for Cayo Saetía to replace the existing drawbridge, allowing better navigation for vessels.

Other notable projects include a salt harvester created for the Geominsal Business Group in Puerto Padre, designed to collect layers up to 200 millimeters thick with a capacity of 100 tons per hour, helping prevent impurities in the final product.

The center follows rigorous standards that encompass theoretical research, technical design, documentation, manufacturing oversight, design validation, and change control

With over 35 years of experience in research and machinery development, Cedema operates under the Sideromechanical Industry Business Group (Gesime) and provides specialized technical services, including the implementation of comprehensive maintenance systems, conformity assessments for technological processes, and certification of export products for the Ministry of Industries.
