The health system in Holguín promotes a comprehensive program for the rehabilitation of patients with Spinocerebellar Ataxia type II (SCA2) with the aim of improving the consequences of this degenerative and incurable disease.
Tania Yanet Ávila Cantallops, head of the rehabilitation department at the Provincial Directorate of Public Health, told ACN that through physical and occupational therapies they contribute to reducing coordination, balance, walk and language disorders associated with course of pathology.
She highlighted that these programs are the only treatment alternative so far, because despite the execution of various clinical trials with encouraging results, there is still no cure for ataxia.
Nutritional counseling and psychosocial support are also added to the therapies, where guidance is provided to patients and their families about the pathology and its manifestations.
In the eastern territory, with the highest prevalence rate of the disease in Cuba, there is also a center for research and rehabilitation of this condition, based on the actions of a multidisciplinary team of specialists, where gene carrier families are monitored.
Likewise, alternative treatments based on the practice of sports and yoga are carried out to facilitate the self-validity of patients and incorporate them into society; as well as the development of clinical trials that contribute to slowing the evolution of this condition.
SCA2 can appear between two and 65 years of age and the majority of patients or people at risk of getting sick are concentrated in the municipality of Báguano, where health actions are promoted to contribute to early diagnosis, inserted in dates such as International Ataxia Day, celebrated annually on September 25.
