The First Territorial Workshop on Reproductive Health, held in Holguín with the participation of specialists from the eastern provinces, ratified the importance that the country offers to this issue as a fundamental human right, which is why each year numerous material resources are allocated to patients and highly trained staff to make the dream of many come true.

With the presence of doctors Miladys Orraca Castillo and Roberto Álvarez Fumero, president of the Cuban Scientific Society for Family Development and member of that group, respectively, the main techniques and procedures related to the National Program of Comprehensive Care for Infertile Couples were updated after the presentation of a dozen conferences by experts, which led to a wide debate between the audience and speakers.

Topics for debate included the update on the demographic aspects of the Cuban population, by Dr. Eloy Verdecia Silva, head of the Territorial Center for Assisted Reproduction of Holguín, who pointed out that at the end of 2020 Cuba had more than 11 million 181 thousand 595 inhabitants, a lower figure in relation to the previous year, while fertility remains sustained, below the replacement level.

Dr. Verdecia Silva said that in that period the global fertility rate was 1.52 children per woman, with a high level of fertility in adolescence, with values in recent years higher than 51 births per thousand females under 20 years old.

The provinces of Havana, Santiago de Cuba, Holguín and Granma contribute 45.4 percent of births, while Cuba naturally decreases by 7,401 people.

Faced with this situation, Dr. Roberto Álvarez Fumero pointed out that infertility is a worldwide problem, but for Cuba it has a higher relevance, because the demographic panorama of our country has been characterized, for more than 35 years, by a population decrease.

Dr. Fumero presented the result of a study carried out on the Determination of the prevalence of female infertility in Cuba, unpublished until now, which reveals that the incidence of infertility at the country level, in 2018, was 4.0 percent of women of childbearing age, while there are no significant differences according to the area of residence, although it was higher (4.73%) in the central region and lower (3.52%) in the eastern region, while the infertile females, their male partner was infertile in 4.2%.

The main causes of infertility were related to tubal factor, ovarian insufficiency and uterine causes, in addition the factors significantly associated with female infertility were pelvic inflammatory disease and previous ectopic pregnancies.

Other issues addressed during the professional exchange were related to transvaginal ultrasound in assisted reproduction, thyroid pathologies and its impact on infertility; poor ovarian response, efficacy in ovulation induction and gamete donation, among others.
