The International Police (Interpol) rejected a second red warrant against former President Rafael Correa for alleged links with the investigation into the kidnapping of the politician Fernando Balda.

The decision was made although the judicial system had declared the ex-president as a fugitive and has summoned him for trial.

Correa insists that the case is part of a plot of political persecution against him that also targets other former officials from his government (2007-2017).

Interpol noted that it will not include the former head of State in its search and arrest list for extradition, because there is no cause for that.

In December 2018, Interpol rejected a similar action requested by Judge Daniella Camacho.

On his Twitter account, the lawyer Alejandro Vanegas said, 'INTERPOL again put a politicized Administration of Justice in Ecuador in its right place!!!'

The lawyer noted that Rafael Correa is a victim of political persecution, as well as the leaders of the Citizens' Revolution Movement led mainly by former members of his cabinet. / PL
