Mexican authorities continue on Wednesday without clues about 44 alleged Central American migrants who disappeared between March 8 and 11 in Tamaulipas and Monterrey, the government said.

Sources from the Interior Ministry's Undersecretariat for Human Rights, Migration and Population admitted that they do not have evidence so far about what happened to two buses in those states in which a group of people were traveling to the United States.

In Tamaulipas, about 19 passengers were kidnapped, although other sources said that there were 22 people, while in Monterrey, those kidnapped on Tuesday total 25. The hypothesis by the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Participation is that both events might be linked to human trafficking, although it stated that the relavant investigation is being carried out.

Undersecretary Alejandro Encinas Rodriguez acknowledged that the investigations into both cases have had little progress, but press reports say that this is not about collective kidnappings but also about personal events, presumably linked to human traffikcing, something that the authorities have already faced in other Mexican states.

In that regard, the official noted that criminal gangs have not only recruited migrants for their organization, but also take them directly to the United States in exchange for a ramsom from their relatives. / PL
