The Holguín poet Ronel González deserved the José Jacinto Milanés National Poetry Prize granted by the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) in Matanzas, for his poems Nada es real salvo la noche (Nothing is real except the night).
The author, best known for his rhymed poetry, this time makes use of the free verse to write the history of the Cuban nineteenth-century independence wars, focused on the universal themes of human beings such as love, hate, joy, sadness, victory, defeat, betrayal, doubts and popular cults.
The book, which takes its title from one of the poems related to the sadly famous reconcentration of Valeriano Weyler, is the third of a pentalogy that the author intends to write with the historical theme.
“With this pentalogy I pretend to give coherence to a stage of my creation. I am very passionate about history; I have read it and suffered it and I reflect that in my poetry. It does not mean that I will become a historian, although every time I finish a book, I think there is still a lot to tell about all the material that history offers to poetry,”González Sánchez said.
The Holguín writer has also won the Ciudad del Che National Scholarship Award and the Ciudad del Che National Prize in Poetry, both from the UNEAC of Santa Clara; the Raúl Ferrer Prize for the Work of a Lifetime, as a promoter of reading, of the José Martí National Library; the Francisco (Paco) Mir National Prize, convened by the UNEAC of the Isla de la Juventud, in poetry; and the Distinction Illustrious Son of Cacocum, the poet's homeland.
The José Jacinto Milanés National Poetry Prize, also sponsored by the Provincial Center of Books and Literature, the Provincial Directorate of Culture, the House of Letters Digdora Alonso and Ediciones Matanzas, as a tribute to the most illustrious writer of that territory, have been also granted to Holguín writers Luis Yuseff, Yunior García, Edurman Mariño and Moisés Mayán.
