The attractive colonial city of Gibara, also known as Villa Blanca de los Cangrejos, is getting ready to host the 15th edition of the International Film Festival (FIC) from July 7 to 13, with more than 70 films in competitions from countries such as Germany Spain, United Kingdom, Iceland, Switzerland, Argentina and Cuba.
Maylán Heredia Martínez, head of the Programming Department of the Provincial Cinema Center in Holguín, said to the Cuban News Agency that as part of the preparations in this coastal town, located about 30 kilometers from the provincial capital, renovation actions were carried out in the main presentation spaces.
In this regard she highlighted the restoration of the museums, in addition to maintenance work in the culture center and the emblematic Jibá Cinema, which included, among other actions, the painting and renovation of both buildings, essential for the artistic movement of Gibara, including the FIC.
This year’s edition of the festival includes the opening of new areas for the exhibitions of photographs and plastic arts at the Ordoño and the Arsenita hotels, located in the historical center of the city.
The recently opened cultural center “El Almacén” will also open its doors to filmmakers, producers, actors, musicians and other artists who will participate in the festival, she explained.
During the event, Gibara will become a must-visit place with aesthetic proposals for all ages, concerts, plays, film screenings, as well as panels and conferences aimed to discuss about the most recent film production of the world.
Since April 2003, when the late filmmaker Humberto Solás created the Non-Budget Film Festival, Gibara remains as the permanent headquarters of this cultural event that each year gathers filmmakers from different countries.
Distinguished by its malecon, vegetation, caves and the conservation of its architectural heritage that made it worthy of the status of National Monument, the White Villa de los Cangrejos combines history and modernity and the hospitality of its people, which turn it into an important tourist destination.
