The way films portray women, the differences between the male and female views, and a critical audience’s take on them were a topic for panel discussions in the International Poor Film Festival currently under way in Gibara, Cuba.
The meeting "Rewriting stories: gender and cinema today", moderated by the journalist Rafael Grillo and attended by the Swiss filmmaker Laura Cazador, the singer-songwriter Rochy Ameneiro, the renowned puppeteer and artistic director Ruben Dario Salazar, the screenwriter Patricia Ramos, and the attaché for Cultural, Economic and Political Affairs of the Swiss Embassy in Cuba, Febe Tognina, touched upon key concepts such as "male gaze" and "female gaze" and stressed that the filmmakers are responsible for restoring the viewer's vision of the actors as subjects rather than objects.
Ms. Ramos talked about the considerable differences found in the Cuban film industry, where the number of movies produced or directed by women is much lower, a fact revealing of a notable gender bias that increasingly affects Cuban female creators.
The participants also approached aspects such as the creation of programs for children from which they can learn about equality and the development of more inclusive projects addressed to a critical audience.
The 19th Gibara International Poor Cinema Festival picked up its original name from when it was founded by [late Cuban filmmaker] Humberto Solás in 2003 and maintains its goal of protecting the seventh art and every form of creation. (Source: ACN)
