Holguín to welcome 30th edition of Romerías de Mayo

The 30th edition of Romerías de Mayo will be held in the city of Holguín from May 2 to 8 with a wide program of activities that includes concerts, theoretical events, plastic and performing arts and book presentations.


Also known as the World Festival of Artistic Youth, the event is organized by the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS) and is dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the birth of José Martí, the 4th Congress of this organization, and the people and culture of Mexico.

Armando Ruiz Olivera, president of the AHS in Holguín, said at press conference that this year the Romerías will encompass more than 16 events and several plazas for the promotion of avant-garde young art.

The three decades of creation of this mega event will be celebrated with tributes to the founding personalities, which will have the participation of young artists from all over the country, as well as Youth Teachers who contribute with their work to the development of novel creation in Cuba, he explained.

The Congress of Thought Memoria Nuestra (Our Memory), considered the backbone of the event, will have on its first day an opening conference by the researcher Francisca López Civeira, National Social Sciences Award 2022, added Luis Felipe Maldonado, head of the organizing committee.

The Congress will have as its main theme "Interculturality between the peoples of Cuba and Mexico", with the participation of delegates from various provinces in conferences, round tables, panels and debates; In addition, the Memoria Nuestra awards for Research and Sociocultural Project will also be awarded.

The space for visual arts, Babel, will be dedicated to murals, as a tribute to the Mexican movement of the first half of the 19th century, for which several interventions of this type will be carried out in different spaces and institutions in the city, carried out by students from the Professional Academy of Plastic Arts El Alba and by young artists from the country.

The agenda also includes the personal exhibition by the artist Lesbia Vent Dumois, 2019 National Prize for Plastic Arts, who will also give lectures on the technique of engraving, said Roxana La O, in charge of this space.

The performing arts will display an extensive itinerant program, its organizer Yasser Velázquez said, both in the streets and parks, as well as in the halls of the Eddy Suñol Theater, with Morón Teatro, Teatro Tuyo, Teatro de la Totalidad and the Etcétera Humorous Group; It will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of Danza en Paisajes Públicos (Dance in Public Landscapes space), hosted by the Codanza company.

For its part, Cámara Azul, an event that brings together young audiovisual creators, will hold projections, panels and discussion tables dedicated to the art of animation in Cuba, pointed out Aniel Santiesteban, section head and organizer of this event.

Palabras compartidas (Shared words), an space for literature in Romerías de Mayo, will honor the centenary of the Cuban poetess and researcher Fina García Marruz,; while the Bloguerías will pay tribute to the late Carlos Parra Zaldívar, one of its founders, and will have two panels dedicated to women in political communication.

These Romerías de Mayo will feature Frank Delgado, Raúl Paz, David Blanco, Polito Ibáñez, Ray Fernández, Manuel Leandro Sánchez, Raúl Prieto, Eduardo Sosa, Karamba, Norberto Leyva, Luis Barbería and Figaro's Jazz Club, among other groups and soloists who will perform in different spaces, in addition to the opening and closing concerts.
