The traditional parade from the Monument to Che to the Calixto Garcia Park officially opened on Wednesday the 25th edition of the Romerias de Mayo festival, which pays homage to its founders.

The stage located in front of the Provincial Museum of History La Periquera welcomed Cuban artists and guests from 20 countries attending the event, dedicated to the 200 anniversary of Karl Marx and the 150 years of struggle of the Cuban people.

The opening gala had the participation of members of the Cuban School of Wushu and the company Asiart-Dance, the performance of Cuban troubadours Polito Ibáñez and Eduardo Sosa, as well as foreign artists Irina Gerus (Ukraine) and David Chapet with the rock band Bettle Next.

Alexis Triana, founder of the Romerias, delivered the traditional speech in which he welcomed Cuban and foreign delegates to the festival in the capital of young art.

Triana recalled the hard times in which the Romerias were created, amid the shortages of the Special Period, and thanked the political and governmental authorities of the territory that since then have provided their support to the organizing committee.

He also urged to multiply this world festival: "There is a commitment to reach 50 countries, to make a world festival of artistic youths and cultural promoters as there is none in the world. That is the heritage of Holguin, that has been our foundation, "he said.

To defend the slogan of the festival, "Because there is no today without yesterday," the delegates climbed to the top of the Loma de la Cruz carrying the ax of Holguin, as a symbol of tradition and modernity.

The Romerías, held for the first time in 1994, is the largest event organized each year from May 2 to 8 by the Hermanos Saíz Association, an organization of the young Cuban artistic avant-garde.
