Media Forum in Cuba Sets Great Expectations

Media representatives from Latin America and other parts of the world will have the opportunity next week in Havana to debate about globalization's impact and new technologies, Prensa Latina's President, Luis Enrique Gonzalez, said on Monday.
The emblematic National Hotel, will host the event, sponsored by this news agency, on January 21st and 22nd. Dozens of reporters, directors and experts of renowned trajectory in analyzing the social role of journalism and its commitment to truth and the common good have already confirmed their attendance.
It will be a forum for exchanging opinions on Latin America's need of journalism capable of dealing with media manipulation and fake news, Gonzalez said.
This issue is particularly important in our region, because we see how media try to impose hegemonic positions and attack progressive governments that push agendas based on sovereignty, integration and social benefit, he explained.
Regarding Prensa Latina's call, he pointed out it is part of the 60th Anniversary of Operation Truth, a meeting held in Havana less than three weeks after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution on January 1, 1959.
Then, the Revolution's leader, Fidel Castro, invited 400 foreign journalists to know first hand about the trials against war criminals from the overthrown Fulgencio Batista dictatorship, amid lies that were being spread over the process, he recalled.
Manipulation and fake news scenario is far from over, and it has worsened in the current context of globalization and as information and communication technologies have being developing, Gonzalez added.
Prensa Latina was precisely created as a result of Operation Truth's idea that people, especially those in the region, should have their own information sources to protect themselves against lies, he said, referring to the agency which will celebrate its 60th anniversary in June this year. / PL
