Cuba's Art and Fashion Adorn Catwalk in the United States

The works of creators of the plastic arts came to life outside the canvas in the form of costumes made by five Cuban designers, exhibited during a great festival that continues today in the US capital.
On this Monday, pieces by renowned figures such as Adigio Benítez, Alfredo Sosabravo, Manuel Mendive, Roberto Diago and Roberto Fabelo inspired the colorful dresses that filled a catwalk on the Millennium Stage at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
This important institution hosts from May 8 to June 3 the Arts of Cuba festival: from the island to the world, which brings together about 400 creators and performers in half a hundred activities.
Within that celebration of the culture of the Caribbean nation, a parade of the Art and Fashion project was included, in which the costumes conceived by Sandra de Huelbes, Ignacio Carmona, Otto Chaviano, Mariela Aleman and Celia Ledón, were shown.
All of them belong to the event that emerged in the Caribbean country in 2003 with the aim of combining the design with paintings, drawings, sculptures or photographs, the director of the initiative, Rafael Méndez, told Prensa Latina.
Julia Poteat, fashion design professor at the Parsons school in New York City, who met Méndez in 2012 during a trip to the island and is linked since then to Art and Fashion, was in charge of presenting the proposals that awoke the admiration of the public.
It is an 'extraordinary combination of imagination, fine arts, and design', said the woman about the pieces in which they were used from high-quality textiles to industrial recycled products and natural resources.
By its part, the Kennedy Center had urged to attend the activities and qualified it as 'a light and color show' that reflects 'the national spirit of the Caribbean country.'
According to the director of Art and Fashion, in Cuba there has been an influence of European and North American design, 'but we have a different way of doing things and we put a very Cuban stamp on it.' / Prensa Latina
