China demanded the United States refrain from formally asking Canada for the extradition of Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., when the case was considering unfair and the violations of their legitimate rights was denounced.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told reporters that her government is paying attention to reports on the official presentation of the Washington request and urged Ottawa to release the executive because her case does not qualify as judicial.

She described Meng's detention on December 1 in Vancouver as a serious mistake, a flagrant act of hegemony and a violation of the rights, interests and security of a Chinese citizen. Hua also demanded the United States to revoke the arrest warrant and warned that Beijing will respond if extradition takes place.

The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman considered disrespectful and an interference in judicial sovereignty the open letter signed by former diplomats and intellectuals from several countries and sent to China for the stay in prison of Canadian men Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor.

Hua stressed that China welcomes foreigners interested in developing research, friendly exchanges or other activity in their territory as long as they respect laws and regulations.

Since Meng was arrested, about 13 Canadians were detained in Beijing due to several reasons, among them Kovrig and Spavor. Eight of them were released from prison and China assured that it respects the rights and interests of each one while their respective legal processes last. / PL
