As of this April 19, Cuba has a new president. He is not part of the historical leadership of the Revolution, of those who led by Fidel Castro participated in the heroic deed on January 1, 1959, but he is part of a generation that was born under the socialist work and stood at the example of its main leaders, who fought decisive battles for the sustainability and continuity of the Revolution.

Minutes after taking office, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, recently elected President of the Council of State, said that the mandate given by the people to this legislature is to give continuity to the Revolution and will be based on the updating of the social economic model and the improvement of work in all areas of the nation's life.

"I know the expectations that moments like these provoke," he said, "but we have the strength, intelligence and wisdom of the majority of the people, with the experience and leadership of the Party, with the ideas of Fidel, with the presence of Raúl, accompanied also by the valuable leader and worker José Ramón Machado Ventura, as second secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) ".

Knowing the desire of Cubans grateful to have more time with the presence of Raul leading the destiny of the country, Diaz-Canel said: "Knowing the popular feeling I reaffirm this assembly, Supreme Organ of state power, that the Comrade General of the Army Raúl Castro Ruz, as the first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, will lead the most important decisions for the present and future of the nation.”

He ratified the PCC as the leading force of society and the State and guarantor of the unity of the nation and assured to continue counting on the strength, the prestige, the exemplarity of an army that will never cease to be the uniformed people.

He said that to this confidence expressed by the people through the vote there is only one way to correspond and is working tirelessly to respond to their demands and needs, in a permanent and close bond with our people who he qualified as humble, generous and noble.

"This election process that ends today has become a resounding victory for the unity of the Cuban people and an expression of commitment to defend the revolutionary work," he said in his speech.
