The installation of center-pivot irrigation systems stands out among the initiatives in Holguín province to implement sustainable practices in food production in demonstration plots throughout the territory.

These projects are based on the premise of incorporating renewable energy, water conservation, and the use of technologies aimed at improving soil health, explained Geovanny Zaldívar Martínez, deputy delegate of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment.

Work is being done on developing high-quality seeds and planting alternatives that make better use of agricultural space, while scientific research focuses on strengthening the production of root crops and vegetables resilient to climate change, ensuring more resilient and productive agriculture.

He also explained that solar panels have been installed on forestry farms and in water supply systems to facilitate agricultural growth in municipalities within the Turquino Plan, such as Mayarí and Frank País.

The expert emphasized the promotion of natural fertilizers as a substitute for imported pesticides, which are expensive to acquire due to the tightening of the United States' economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba.

Holguín is implementing joint projects with the World Food Programme and the United Nations Development Fund aimed at leveraging local capacities and promoting self-sufficiency in the municipalities.

The province is also introducing scientific and technological advancements focused on creating employment opportunities, promoting agronomy studies among younger generations, and increasing alternative production to strengthen nutritional sovereignty. (Source: ACN)
