Holguín ended 2025 with significant progress in the use of renewable energy, marking a decisive step toward transforming its energy matrix. The eastern province installed five solar parks as part of the national strategy to reach 109 megawatts (MW) of clean energy and reduce its dependence on diesel for electricity generation.

The new photovoltaic farms were located in Corúa (Mayarí), La Caridad (Rafael Freyre), Pilón (Antilla), Providencia (Holguín city), and Cueto, which is still under construction. Each will contribute 21.8 MW to the system, positioning Holguín as one of the territories most committed to energy transition.
According to the Electric Company, 2025’s output saved around eight thousand tons of diesel, equivalent to five million dollars.

The solar energy program extended to various economic and social sectors. In agriculture, health, and water resources, solar-powered irrigation, pumping, and equipment systems were promoted with the support of state companies and technological projects. This integrative approach strengthened sustainable development and energy efficiency.

In the health sector, Holguín stood out for hosting major scientific and social events, including the National Congress of Social Work focused on disability care. The visit of experts from University College London was also significant, as they collaborated with Cuban scientists on research related to Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type II—a major step forward for biomedical studies on the island.

The province also focused on optimizing water use amid the severe drought that struck in 2025. Scientific and innovative projects were implemented in reservoirs such as Güirabo, Cacoyugüín, and Gibara to use their dead storage volume more effectively. These initiatives sought to mitigate climate impact and secure supplies for the population and agriculture.

In education, the University of Holguín earned an “excellence” designation for five academic programs from the National Accreditation Board. Additionally, the school network in several municipalities was reorganized to optimize resources amid declining enrollment, ensuring educational continuity with quality and equity.

The fields of transportation and tourism also saw progress. New railway routes were opened to rural and interprovincial areas, and new air connections with Russia and Germany were established, boosting international tourism to the region’s destinations. At the same time, the province hosted major cultural events such as Iberoarte, the Ibero-American Festival, and the Romerías de Mayo.

However, the year was also marked by Hurricane Melissa, which left a deep impact on municipalities like Cacocum. Despite the damage, acts of solidarity and resilience prevailed.

In this context, Holguín closed 2025 reaffirming its commitment to science, technology, clean energy, and the human values that define its people, in a year dedicated to the centenary of Fidel Castro’s birth. (Source: ACN)
