The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) in Holguín province is promoting reforestation efforts in areas affected by mining, with the aim to restore ecosystems damaged by this activity.
Through these initiatives, CITMA seeks to recover biodiversity and return essential environmental functions to impacted areas.
Norkis Ochoa Aguilera, a specialist from the agency, stated that the Nickel Business Group has an entity dedicated to rehabilitation and a Community Environmental Education Center, known as the Ecoarte program, which promotes joint actions with CITMA to achieve this goal.
Among the main actions are the planting of native species such as Pinus cubensis, which has a high propagation rate. Visits are also organized for primary school students, during which experts give talks on the importance of reintegrating mining activity into nature within these ecosystems.
In Moa, a municipality with the largest mineral reserves, children’s participation contests and screenings of audiovisual materials on this topic are encouraged, according to the specialist. These activities aim to raise environmental awareness among younger generations.
Over the last five years, Holguín has restored more than two thousand hectares, a joint effort between CITMA, the forestry sector, nickel companies, and the community.
The soil rehabilitation program for mining-damaged areas began in Cuba in 1970 and seeks to restore biodiversity, replenish water levels, and expand forested areas, with ongoing monitoring of reintroduced species to ensure their survival. (Source: ACN)
