Holguín holds exemplary trial for drug trafficking

An exemplary trial took place on September 25 in the Holguín Provincial People's Court against three citizens for the crime of illicit drug trafficking.

 All three had been involved in the sale of the drug Cannabis Sativa Lssp Indica, commonly known as marijuana. Through the efforts of the National Anti-Drug Department of the municipality of Banes, two of the defendants were arrested on public roads after driving to the other's home, where they found a nylon wrapper in the shape of a mouthful or chocolate containing marijuana, which the other had prepared for them.

The defendants were punished under Law 151 of 2022 of the current Penal Code with a penalty of 4 to 10 years' imprisonment. They were given the aggravating circumstance of committing the crime at night, a circumstance chosen deliberately to achieve success in their criminal activities. Two defendants were sentenced to 6 years' imprisonment; the other received an 8-year prison sentence, also for having the multiple recidivism stipulated in the aforementioned law.

Cannabis sativa indica, commonly known as marijuana, is part of the group of hallucinogenic drugs and constitutes a social danger, as it can cause motivational syndrome and psychological dependence. It is subject to international control according to the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Substances, in Schedules I and IV, of which Cuba is a signatory.
