Around 300 aftershocks, 15 of them perceptible, were registered in the central-eastern region of Cuba, informed Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the National Seismological Service of the National Center for Seismological Research (Cnais by its Spanish acronym).

There has been fake information that indicates that there is danger of tsunami, but the south coast of the archipelago is not favorable for such phenomena to occur, he clarified in information offered to the Cuban Television Information System.

A team of specialists made up of Cnais geologists and civil engineers is evaluating the intensity of the earthquakes according to the damage they caused in the towns of Pilon, Niquero and Media Luna, Campechuela and Manzanillo, in Granma, he said.

He said that evidence is still being sought to prepare a detailed report on the devastation caused by the earthquakes that occurred on Sunday morning.

Yudelkis Ortiz Barcelo, first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in Granma, pointed out the occurrence of landslides, damage to houses, institutions and power lines.

The authorities urged the population to remain calm, to leave vulnerable places in danger of landslides and to follow the indications of the Cnais and the Civil Defense, who provide timely information.

On Sunday at 10:50 a.m. a perceptible earthquake of 6.0 magnitude on the Richter scale was registered 48 kilometers (km) southeast of Pilon, while at 11:49 a.m. an aftershock of 6.7 occurred 32 km southeast of that municipality of Granma. (Source: ACN)
