Cuba mourns the death of Pope Francis

Miguel Díaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Party Central Committee and President of the Republic, today expressed his condolences for the death of Pope Francis, at the age of 88, and highlighted the affection shared between the supreme pontiff and the people of Cuba.
In his message in X, the Cuban head of state expressed that the legacy of the also known was the bishop of Rome since March 2013, was unforgettable. “The signs of affection and cordial closeness that he transmitted to our compatriots were always reciprocated by the Cubans,” Diaz-Canel added in his publication.

Pope Francis died at 7:35 a.m. local time, a few hours after his holiness' public appearance in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican on the occasion of Easter Sunday.

Between September 19 and 22, 2015, Pope Francis visited Cuba, after his predecessors in the highest leadership of Rome also visited the largest of the Antilles: John Paul II (from January 21 to 25, 1998), and Benedict XVI (between March 26 and 28, 2012).
Francis, the first Latin American to be head of state of the Vatican, during his apostolic visit to Cuba made homilies in Havana, Holguín and Santiago de Cuba.
