The Olympic champion and silver medallist Leuris Pupo could not climb to the podium in the individual rapid pistol event due to a malfunction in his pistol, although he later won team gold in that modality, at the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador-2023.
This is the eleventh gold and the sixteenth medal of Leuris in Centrocaribe, which confirms him as the most successful Holguín athlete in those events.
On the first day of the individual 25-meter rapid-fire pistol competition, Pupo had a malfunction in his gun, which pushed him to shared 14th place. In the second day he did not manage to fully recover, but he placed third.
As the first two places were the Cubans Jorge Álvarez and Jorge Grau, Leuris fell to fourth place, since, according to the regulations, a country cannot receive all three medals from the same event.
In a gesture of great significance, the Mexican Fidencio González, who won the bronze, gave that medal to the Holguin athlete, to whom, he estimated, it really belonged.
Leuris regretted what happened with his pistol, but was pleased that the gold and silver medals remained in the hands of the Cubans.
In the team tournament of this modality, in San Salvador, the Cubans conquered the top with 1,634 points, followed by Guatemala and Puerto Rico.
Until Tuesday, the Holguín athletes in San Salvador had won ten medals (two gold, five silver and three bronze).
