CARICOM opens regional travel bubble to reactivate tourism

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) implemented on Friday a regional 'travel bubble' to try to reactivate tourism among its member and associated countries that comply with a series of requirements.
At first, the initiative only includes Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, states that currently satisfy the adopted conditions.
These measures, approved by the CARICOM heads of government based on a study by the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), establish several categories: countries without Covid-19 patients and those with low, medium, high and very high risk of transmitting the virus regarding the positive rate for 14 days.
CARICOM leaders considered that the last six months have been very challenging globally and regionally due to the pandemic and the severe damages caused to the travel and tourism sector.
A recent study by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) indicated that Caribbean countries have suffered a drop in tourist visits between 57% and 75% in 2020, with losses estimated between US$22,000 and US$28 billion. / PL
