The spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said today that her country will respond wisely to possible U.S. sanctions for the imprisonment of opposition blogger Alexei Navalny.

The local foreign ministry spokeswoman commented on the Soloviev Live YouTube channel on the statements of U.S. Senator Mitt Romney on the need to impose sanctions on 'persons responsible' Moscow for the imprisonment of the opposition leader.

According to Zakharova, a response to the sanctions imposed against Russia is necessary, but 'we should not act aggressively, but wisely. It is always much more useful and efficient.

The Republican senator said Tuesday that his country will soon introduce a bill providing for sanctions against Russia due to its actions in the Navalny case.

The United States always finds reasons to impose sanctions on Russia, they do not need specific reasons to do so, Zakharova warned.

A Moscow court sentenced Navalny to 3.5 years in prison the day before on charges of large-scale fraud in the sphere of his business activity. But he will only have to serve 2.5 years for the time he spent under house arrest.

Navalny was arrested upon his return to Russia from Germany last January 17, where he recovered in a hospital from alleged neurotoxin poisoning, an event for which he blamed his government, which rejected such an accusation and showed evidence of not being linked to the event.
