Yemen is teetering on the edge of complete collapse, while famine is imminent for millions of children and their families there, United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Executive Director Henrietta Fore warned.

Life is a waking nightmare for 12 million children in Yemen, in fact, that country is perhaps the most dangerous place on earth to be a child, the senior official said.

One child dies every 10 minutes from a preventable disease and two million are out of school, Fore detailed in a recent report.
Thousands have been killed, maimed or recruited in the conflict that has lasted since 2015, the UNICEF director lamented.

The crisis escalated in 2015 with the beginning of bombings by an anti-insurgent Saudi-led coalition.

At present, over 80% of the Yemeni population -more than 24 million people- require urgent humanitarian assistance and protection, according to UN data.
