Germany Highlights Importance of Migrants for its Economy

Germany will need at least 260 000 immigrants a year over the next four decades to meet the demand for labor, says a study presented Tuesday by Bertelsmann Foundation.

Without foreigners, the number of workers will be massively reduced by some 16 million people - that is, by almost a third - by 2060, due to population ageing, the report said.

'Even if German women and men worked equally and the retirement age was set at 70, the demand for skilled workers could not be covered by domestic funds', the document added.

These estimates are based on figures from the Employment Research Institute and the Coburg University of Applied Sciences.

The analysis takes into account a possible higher birth rate and higher recruitment and productivity of nationals, but it is still considered necessary to encourage migrants arrival from Europe and other regions.
