Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Cardinal Donald Wuerl from the pastoral government of the Archdiocese of Washington, United States, the Holy See informed.

The brief statement does not provide further details on the replacement of the 77-year-old cardinal appointed in 2006 by Benedict XVI to replace Theodore McCarrick, who resigned last July from the College of Cardinals, accused of pedophilia and was removed apart from his clerical duties, by the Pope Francisco.

The Supreme Pontiff also ordered McCarrick, 88, to remain in a house that would be indicated 'for a life of prayer and penance, until the accusations made are cleared by the canonical regular process.'

Wuerl, who submitted his resignation for the first time in November 2015 on his 75th birthday, was challenged last August for an investigation into sexual abuse by priests in Pennsylvania, for not acting properly in cases that occurred in that state when he served as bishop of Pittsburg.

The cardinal was also impugned for allegedly knowing about the accusations against his predecessor about a document through which he requested the resignation of the Pope, done by the former nuncio Carlo María Viganó. / PL
