The agricultural sector in the province of Holguín is involved in one of the largest planting programs of all time with an area of more than 30 thousand hectares as part of the country's economic strategies to increase food production.
Vladimir Ricardo Estrada, delegate of that branch in the province, said to the ACN that the planting program represents a 36 percent growth compared to the same stage of the previous year and includes the different crops, mainly in the varieties of viands, grains and vegetables.
The cold season in agriculture extends in Cuba between September and February. In the first weeks of the current season, the sector shows favorable indicators in the different productive areas of the eastern province, with the planting mainly of cassava, sweet potato, banana and grains, distinctive crops in the Holguín territory.
The bulk of the plan in this stage will be implemented from October to December, for which the different agricultural entities have the means and machinery necessary for land preparation.
Ricardo added that the increase in areas to be planted in this campaign amounts to about eight thousand hectares above the initial commitment in response to the demands of the national economy to raise harvest levels in communities and municipalities with the aim to increase the territorial food self-supply.
In this context, the delegation of agriculture includes among its priorities the expansion of the rice program, which is gradually increasing with the planting of new areas in Holguín based on the availability of water as one of the basic resources in that branch, he explained.
Agricultural production in Holguín is concentrated in more than 70 percent in the peasant and cooperative sector, which has about 37 thousand members of the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) grouped in almost 400 productive forms, added Amaury Velásquez Zaldívar, president of that organization in the province.
