The signing of the Voluntary Declaration Agreement for the Elimination of Ozone Layer Depleting Substances (ODS) by 54 companies in the province of Holguín stands out among the achievements of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment regarding the protection of the blue gas, whose world day is celebrated on the 16th of this month.
Norkis Ochoa, a specialist in this branch, told ACN that the agreement extends until 2030 and stipulates the replacement of Hifrofluorocarbons (HCFCs), made up of chlorine, fluorine, hydrogen and carbon, considered highly harmful and used in industry as refrigerant gases.
She said that among these entities the National Omnibus Base Business Unit, the CUPET Fuel Marketing Companies, the Hydraulic Research and Projects (RAUDAL) and the Workers' Services (GARBO) stand out with outstanding progress in meeting these objectives.
Ochoa stressed that these results are also compounded by courses on good practices in the specialty of refrigeration, which have allowed the training of more than 100 technicians in the specific use of these components.
This strategy also contributes to compliance with the Montreal Protocol, the first global agreement aimed at preserving the environment signed on September 16, 1987 in that Canadian city, she added.
Holguín also has three entities proposed for the National Free ODS Award, granted each year in Cuba during the celebrations for the anniversary, which are Brisas Guardalavaca and Sol Río de Luna y Mares hotels, as well as the Company of Services to Nickel Workers (ESUNI.
World Ozone Layer Day has been celebrated since 1994 and was instituted by the United Nations World Organization, with the aim of developing initiatives to care for this structure, essential for life on earth, which has been affected by the emission of greenhouse gases.
