The results of the agroecological movement, the peasant tradition in the face of climate change and the exploitation and management of this practice are some of the experiences that farmers from Holguín will exchange during the Provincial Agroecology Forum 2020, to be held from 11 to 25 this month in this eastern province.
The meeting, an annual event convened by the National Association of Small Farmers (Anap), will include the presentation of about 60 papers on contributions in this field and the exchange of experiences on the issue, explained to the ACN Maura González Proenza, specialist in Science and Technology in the Holguín organization.
The production of viands, grains, vegetables and fruits, the use and conservation of soils, the irrigation system, the use of biological means in crops and the genetic improvements to promote agroecological practice are among the topics for debate.
Participants will also address the sustainable elaboration of agricultural implements aimed at guaranteeing from the application of science and technique the food sovereignty of the people.
Sustainable agriculture is one of the main goals of agroecology in Holguín, a province that has a strong movement in this practice of crop protection, to which 28,555 farms are incorporated in the territory, with notable experiences in its application, including the use of biodigesters, the use of organic fertilizers and the production of worm castings as fertilizer for plantations, he explained.
Despite the progress in this area of Science and Technology of the territory, work continues to achieve a greater incorporation of farms to this movement in order to contribute to a greater growth of crops in the different productive forms of the peasant sector, branch that contributes about 80 percent of the food production annually in the territory.
To achieve this objective, it is necessary to sensitize the peasant family, not to use chemical products, to guarantee self-supply on the farm undergoing this process and to be in total harmony with the environment, González added.
