The Center for Studies of Arid Agroecosystems (CEAAR) of the University of Holguín develops projects aimed at the efficient use of agricultural resources in the province.

Based on the analysis of the existing potentialities, the academic group intends to contribute to the production of food and the economic-social development of each territory.

Some of the investigations are related to the use of the land in the productive area in the municipality of Calixto García, said to the Cuban News Agency (ACN) Alexander Salgado, director of the CEAAR.

In this sense, the mechanisms of sustainable financing and land management in forested ecosystems, located in dry or grazing areas, which include the sowing of pasture and forage are evaluated.

Likewise, members of the Center outline methods that allow the livestock business groups in that area to strengthen their capacities for the production and conservation of animal feed.

For this purpose, they plan the creation of a seed bank that guarantees the feeding of livestock during the dry season and therefore stability in meat and milk production.

On the other hand, a group of researchers focuses their efforts on increasing the yield of the land belonging to the municipalities of Mayarí and Urbano Noris, where sugarcane cultivation predominates.

For this, they examine the physicochemical properties that determine water retention in vertic glei soils, affected by salinity.

The creation of CEAAR in 2008 was promoted by the aridity registered in the eastern northwest area of Cuba, accentuated in recent decades by practices such as the monoculture of sugarcane and the development of high-input agriculture.

Since that date, it favors community management of natural resources and the efficiency of processes related to food production, through the use of agroecological and sustainable technology.

It also offers advice on arid agroecosystems, as well as postgraduate courses and training for technicians, specialists and producers.
