Food production is one of the principal tasks for the members of the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) in Holguín, who concentrate their efforts and resources in increasing short-cycle crops of greater demand in the population.
Mayelín Suárez Ramírez, an official of the association, told the ACN news agency that there are more than two thousand hectares of land prepared for the planting of root vegetables, beans, corn and fruits in the different Holguín municipalities.
She added that the agri-food program also includes the production of pork and minor cattle, milk and honey, as well as the planting of tobacco, coffee and sugarcane.
The Holguín farmers contribute over 80 percent of the agricultural productions collected every year in the eastern province, so the commitments towards the self-sufficiency food programs are in charge of farmers associated with the ANAP in the different agricultural areas of the eastern teritory.
Suárez Ramírez, explained that the work is also concentrated in the cultivation of corn, both for human and animal consumption, aimed at contributing to the production of feed mainly destined to the pig farming sector.
The land fund available for farmers is also used to expand the application of science and technology for the benefit of crops as another way that contributes to increasing economic and productive indicators through better use of animal traction and all resources in support of the self-sufficiency food program in the municipalities in response to the priorities outlined by the top leadership of the country in these indicators, Suárez said.
